Transforming Recovered into Renewed Lives – The Essential Role of Support for Child Trafficking Survivors

As we reflect on the recent success of Operation Shine the Light, it is crucial to recognize the importance of what comes after recovery. The collaborative effort of the Hawai’i Department of the Attorney General, the Hawai’i Department of Human Services, the Honolulu Police Department, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and the Susannah Wesley Community Center led to the safe recovery of 11 children and youth across Oʻahu. While this operation marks a significant victory, our work does not end there.

Children and youth who are recovered from such dire circumstances often face a long road to recovery. The trauma they have endured requires specialized care and support to help them heal and rebuild their lives. This is where Pearl Haven, our sanctuary for survivors, plays an indispensable role.

Why Post-Recovery Support is Critical

The immediate aftermath of recovery is a fragile time for survivors of child sex trafficking. These young individuals need more than just a safe space; they need comprehensive, trauma-informed care that addresses their physical, emotional, and psychological needs. Without this support, the risk of re-victimization or further emotional harm remains high.

Pearl Haven: A Beacon of Hope and Healing

At Pearl Haven, we provide a holistic approach to healing that includes therapeutic services, education, and life skills training. Our programs are designed to empower survivors, helping them to reclaim their lives and envision a brighter future. Here’s how Pearl Haven stands out as a sanctuary for these vulnerable young individuals:

Trauma-Informed Care: Our team of dedicated professionals is trained in trauma-informed practices, ensuring that every interaction fosters trust and healing. We offer a range of therapeutic modalities tailored to the individual needs of each survivor.

Comprehensive Support Services: From mental health counseling to educational support, our services are designed to address the multifaceted needs of survivors. We provide a safe environment where they can learn, grow, and rebuild their lives.

Empowering Activities: Through creative and engaging activities such as paddleboarding, music and dance, art classes, as well as growing and preparing their own food, we help build confidence and create positive memories. These experiences are crucial in helping survivors develop a sense of normalcy and joy.

Long-Term Commitment: Our mentorship programs, like the Starfish Mentoring Program, ensure that survivors have a consistent and healthy relationship with a mentor who supports them through their journey. This long-term commitment is vital for sustained healing and growth.

The Ongoing Fight Against Child Trafficking

The success of operations like Shine the Light underscores the importance of continued vigilance and community involvement in combating child trafficking. It is a reminder that we must all play a part in protecting our keiki and ensuring their safety.

How You Can Help

Community members can contribute to this mission by staying informed and vigilant. If you suspect child abuse, neglect, or trafficking, please contact the Hawaiʻi Department of Human Services’ hotlines available 24/7. Your involvement can make a significant difference in the lives of vulnerable children.

Conclusion

At Hoʻōla Nā Pua, our commitment extends beyond recovery. We are dedicated to providing the support and resources necessary for survivors to heal and thrive. The journey from victim to survivor is a challenging one, but with the right support, these young individuals can overcome their past and build a brighter future. Together, we can create a community where every child is safe, valued, and empowered.
